Sony Pictures Classics has released the first trailer for the upcoming film adaptation of the acclaimed graphic novel Defectswhich was written by Adrian Tomino. The film was directed by Randall Park (Ant-Man, Young Rock, Blockbuster), and the story follows Ben (Justin H. min), a self-sabotaging movie fan who finds himself on a journey to find out what he really wants out of life.

I actually had a chance to see this movie at Sundance earlier this year, and it was really good! The main character though was so frustrating because he was so damn cynical! But it was a solid story.

Park spoke about the film saying, “I’m a huge fan of Adrian’s work, and I’m very excited to be collaborating with him and Roadside Attractions on this updated, modern take on ‘Shortcomings.’ In these characters, I see versions of Asian Americans in the my life, those I love, and those I simply tolerate.”

In the film, “Ben, a struggling director, lives in Berkeley, California with his girlfriend, Miko, who works for a local Asian-American film festival. When he’s not running an arthouse cinema as a day job, Ben spends his time obsessing over unavailable blonde women, watching Criterion Collection DVDs and eating out at restaurants with his best friend Alice, a queer student with a dating habit serial. When Miko moves to New York for an internship, Ben is left on his own and begins to explore what he thinks he might want.

Written by Tomine and directed by Park, Defects even stars Sherry Cola, Ally Maki, Debby Ryan, Tavi Gevinson, Sonoya Mizuno, Jacob BatalonAND Timothy Simons.

Defects hits theaters August 4. Enjoy the trailer!
