Actor and director Jason Bateman (Ozarks) is tackling a new dark limited comedy series based on David Gauvey Herbert2021 Esquire Magazine Article”Papa Ball.” Netflix and Aggregate have won in the bidding war to secure the rights to the story. They will find a new title, but the source material will be developed as an 8-episode limited series in which Bateman will star and direct.
“The article begins as most dad vs. dad sports rivalries do. But in Long Island Inferno, two fathers, both with complicated pasts, have gone too far. There have been allegations of stalking, corrupt cops, and mob connections. Neither has ever been the same.
“Resolved not to follow in his aloof father’s footsteps, Bobby Sanfilippo found himself doing just the opposite with his son. He became embroiled in an epic travel baseball dad vs. dad rivalry with a man named John Reardon that led the tabloids to call him “a Steinbrenner from Suffolk County,” “seriously ill,” and one of the worst dads in history of youth sports. He begins in the world of little league baseball and expands into a BEEF-like war between two small-time criminal fathers. Both Sanfilippo and Reardon have criminal records of their own, but what happened in the summer of 2012 at Baseball Heaven will define them and their families forever. Allegations of stalking, threatening text messages, and a wrongful arrest later, at the heart of it all, is a story about the lengths fathers will go to for their children.
Sounds like a wild ride of a story! Bateman is a great actor for the part and I can’t wait to check him out. We’ll let you know more about the series as it progresses.
