Last year, James Gunn AND Peter Safran have become the leaders of DC Studios, hoping to take the comic book-based film studio to a high level, more on par with what Kevin Feige he accomplished at Marvel. It was a natural fit as Gunn has made several successful superhero films, both at Marvel and DC. He has a vision, and it’s in line with where DC hopes to go.
Gunn and Safran have already pitched several titles to be produced by the studio, including films made by Gunn, but the job isn’t all fun and games.
In a recent interview with On Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast, Gunn revealed the one thing he doesn’t like about being the co-CEO of DC Studios:
“I think the worst thing about being a studio person is that I never really considered the number of people we’d have to say no to. ‘No, we’re not picking up your show, or no, we’re not going to, you know, whatever.’ It’s the bloody worst, and it’s not a big part of my job, but it’s the worst. You know, because it’s always been so much more about me. As a director, I’ve always had to hire people, and I feel like, ‘I said say yes to a lot of people. I guess I have to say no because people audition and don’t get the gig. And I think I focus more and more on the yeses than the nos, and I feel the nos” in my gut more now. But I say no every day and I feel good about it.
He has to make the tough decisions, but at least he’s been in the directors shoes and knows what it’s like to be on the other side of the table. Gunn will make the best decisions for the studio and for the continuation of their greater story. It’s what DC Studios has needed for a long time. I can’t wait to see how the next few years at DC develop.
