This week’s retro trailer is for the campy classic from 1984 Dangers of GwendolineAlso known as The dangers of Gwendoline in the land of the Yik-Yaks. The fantasy adventure film was directed by Jackin only, yes, that’s his name. The film is loosely based on the French bondage-themed comic series “Sweet Gwendoline” created by John Willie.
The story follows the journey of Gwendoline (Bruno Kitaen), a young woman who travels to China in search of her missing father, an explorer. Along the way, she meets Beth (2), a thief who becomes his companion. Together, they embark on an expedition to find the hidden city of the Yik-Yaks, a mythical place said to be filled with treasures.
As Gwendoline and Beth venture deeper into the dangerous and exotic landscapes, they face numerous dangers and challenges. They meet pirates, slave traders and even a treacherous tribe of Amazonian women. Along the way, Gwendoline’s ingenuity and vulnerability are tested and she discovers her inner strength and her resilience.
The film blends elements of action, adventure and eroticism and features scenes of bondage and fetishism, reflecting the influence of the original comic series. The film has a lighthearted tone, however, with cheesy comedic moments and fun adventures.
The Perils of Gwendoline received mixed reviews and while some enjoyed the film, others criticized its uneven pacing and portrayal of women. As you might expect, the film was a commercial failure, but has gained a cult following over the years.
