Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse it ended on a cliffhanger that left fans wanting more. The movie was so good and told such a wild, funny and intense story! That story will continue with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verseand in a recent interview with writers and producers Phil Lord AND Christopher Millerconfirm that this upcoming film will conclude the story of Mile Morales.
While appearing on Entertainment Tonight, the filmmakers were asked if they’ve always wanted the franchise to be a trilogy, and Miller responded, saying:
“We always knew there was more to tell and that there was a lot to explore, but it wasn’t until we worked on [Across the Spider-Verse] that we realized this was the center piece.
“So now, we actually have a proper plan and we know what we’re doing. At the time, we were just painting ourselves into a corner and trying to find a way out.”
Now, while Beyond the Spider-Verse will wrap up Miles’ story, Miller stressed Through the Spider-Verse creates arcs for several characters, suggesting that the franchise could continue with a different focus. But it seems they are done with the franchise after this third film. Miller added:
“But yeah, that’s everything for us. We’re so tired.”
While this trilogy will complete the story of Miles Morales, the franchise will certainly continue. I have no doubt we will see more animated Spider-Verse movies. There are so many different characters in so many different universes to play as and it will be great to see which of these characters end up getting their own movies!
Producer Amy Pascal has already teased an animated film Spider Woman film, and said it will arrive “sooner than you expect”. So we can’t wait!
As Sony Pictures Animation continues to make these films, I just hope they continue to tell great stories and continue to play with their innovative animation styles!
