Jenna Ortega will return to play Wednesday Addams in Netflix Wednesday Season 2 and she’s also a producer on the project this time, so she actually has some ownership over the series and where the story goes.
He recently offered some insight into the priorities he has for the next chapter of the story, and as the story continues, he’ll lean into the horror of the story. She explains:
“We decided we wanted to delve a little more into the horror aspect of the show. Because it’s so lighthearted, and a show like this with vampires and werewolves and superpowers, you don’t want to take itself too seriously.
I love that they will play more with the horror aspect of the story, this is a direction I agree with 100%! She went on to say that they’re also dropping any romantic love interests for the character, which makes perfect sense as of Wednesday. Ortega went on to say, “We’re dropping any romantic love interests for Wednesday, which is pretty awesome.”
In Season 1 we saw Wednesday in a love triangle between Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan) and Xavier Thorpe (Percy Hynes White). Ortega had previously commented that this part of the story “didn’t make sense” for his character.
As for the first-time move to a producer’s commercial, Ortega explains that the move was a “natural progression” from the work environment in season one. He said:
“We had already pitched so many ideas, and I’m a very hands-on person. I want to know what’s going on, and with a character like Wednesday, who is so beloved and such a legend, I really didn’t want to misunderstand her. So I try to have as many conversations as possible. On set, with the writers and Tim [Burton], we’d all get together and decide, “Okay, what works and what doesn’t?” Of course he was already very cooperative.”
“So in preparation for a second season, we wanted to get ahead of the curve and make sure we can start conversations sooner, and I’m so curious. I want to see the outfits, the new characters that are coming, the scripts and they were kind enough to let me put on my producer hat.
Ortega warmed up to some of the things she was saying about the show’s creative team. One of the wildest admissions she has made was her saying that she started changing lines in the script without telling the writers. She even told herself that she bordered on unprofessional behavior. She said:
“I don’t think I’ve ever had to put my feet on the ground more on a set like I had to on Wednesday. Everything Wednesday does, everything I had to play, didn’t make any sense to her character. Her being in a love triangle? It didn’t make sense. There was a joke about a dress she has to wear to a school dance and she’s like, “Oh my god, I love it.” Ugh, I can’t believe I said that. I literally hate myself.’ I had to say “No”. There were moments on that set where I became almost unprofessional in the sense that I just started to switch lines. The script supervisor thought I was going with something and then I had to sit down with the writers, and they’d be like, ‘Wait, what happened to the scene?’ And I should go explain why I couldn’t go and do certain things.
Well, now that she’s a producer, perhaps the development and production aspects will move more smoothly for everyone. Ortega better tell the creative team what she doesn’t like before filming begins.
