Mark Hamill tells Frank Oz to ban cast and crew from doing Yoda impressions on set

During a recent interview with Wired, Mark Hammill shared an interesting trivia regarding the production of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. When asked if he could do a Yoda impression, Hamill shared that he could, but during the filming of the film, Frank Oz forbade the cast and crew from doing Yoda impressions. He explained why:

“When Frank [Oz] was doing yoda, everyone started doing yoda. The cameramen, the caterers, the wardrobe, the stunt doubles, the stunt doubles. ‘Oh, are you hungry? Are you going to the commissioner? Look, I’m influenced by your impressions and I want to keep it pure.’ So I could see exactly what he was talking about. We all stopped on a penny. And the rest is history.”

I don’t blame him for wanting everyone to stop doing Yoda impersonations on the movie set! Oz brought this character to life in a beautiful way. Oz is the one who actually coined Yoda’s formal yet convoluted syntax, e.g., “We are smaller in number, but greater in mind.” When previously discussing inventing the way Yoda speaks, Oz shared:

“It’s funny that you ask because I was looking at the original script for The Empire Strikes Back the other day and there was some of that weird syntax in it, but it also had Yoda speaking very conversationally. So I told Giorgio [Lucas]: ‘Can I do everything like this?’ And he said, ‘Sure!’ It felt so right.

When asked if he ever gets tired of the endless impersonations of Yoda he hears, he replied, “No, I’m used to it. But people don’t understand, anyone can make a voice. It’s not the voice, it’s the soul.”
