SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE Filmmakers Share Details About How That Big Cameo Happened

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse featured a ton of cameos in the film, but there was one that really stood out and blew the audience away. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, you might want to stop right away because we’re entering spoiler territory.

The big cameo that got a huge fan reaction was the live-action look of Donald Glove like The Predator. In the scene, we see the character in a prison cell at the Spider Society headquarters, and has a brief interaction with Miles Morales.

The directors of the film, Kemp Powers, Joaquim Dos SantosAND Justin K Thompson, recently talked about how this scene made it into the film. The whole thing was a last-minute pick to get around Glover’s busy schedule.

Says Power, “It was shot in a New York studio. Chris Miller flew in to be there in person, and Phil Lord and I were on the video feed giving directions. We made it in the eleventh hour. In fact, even in the audience previews, it was a little cardboard cutout of Donald Glover.”

Ah! I’d actually like to see the cut of the movie that features a cardboard cutout of Glover! Dos Santos added, “We knew it was going to land anyway, because the idea still drove people crazy. That’s when you know you’ve got something.”

Glover’s look was a lot of fun to see and it was completely unexpected. But now we know that really anything is possible in these Spider-Verse films and it will be interesting to see how they continue to play these characters live in these animated films.

Both Tobey Maguire AND Andrew GarfieldSpider-Man characters were shown with archival footage from their films, and then there was a fun scene with Ms. Chen from Venom. It was made using B-roll footage from those films.

The filmmakers had even bigger plans for the live-action segments, but ultimately didn’t use them in the film.
