MoviePass has risen from the grave and is in beta

Remember that MoviePass movie theater subscription service? The one who officially died about 4 years ago? It was a service that allowed you to spend about $10 a month to go see unlimited movies at the theater. He quickly ran into problems and had to change the rules which made people angry. Well, apparently he’s back. Last week, MoviePass Inc. launched once again with a few changes.

Four plans are available (Metro Southern California and New York City residents have a separate set of plans) that let you spend $10-40 a month to see between 1 and 30 movies in over 4,000 locations worldwide. village. I want to point out that at the moment you can only see standard 2D movies, so 3D and large format screens like IMAX are not yet available. Also, the way it works is that you sign up and a MoviePass card loaded with credits is sent to you. These credits are what you use to purchase your tickets with the cost to see a film depending on factors such as show time, day of the week and location of the cinema. This means that seeing a movie during peak hours will most likely cost more than going on at 9pm on a Tuesday. The great thing is that you can save up to 2 months of credits at a time. It should be noted that MoviePass is currently in beta, which means that pricing and other options are subject to change as they figure things out.

Honestly, I don’t think a plan like MoviePass is bad. Even if you only go to see 1-2 movies a month, you are saving money with the lowest plan. The company says that in a survey of more than 10,000 current members, 73% of respondents shared that MoviePass has been a major influencer for returning to the movies. 72% of respondents also said MoviePass has helped them see a greater variety of movies in theaters. Take it with a grain of salt in my opinion, but Stacy Peaksco-founder and CEO of MoviePass, said:

By opening MoviePass to moviegoers nationwide, we’re expanding our support to the film industry by helping drive traffic to all theaters during the critical summer season. Our newly developed service gives our members more choice and flexibility in how they use their monthly credits, while still encouraging them to watch movies in theaters.

What do you think of the return of MoviePass? Will it be a phoenix rising from the ashes in glory, or will it be a decrepit zombie exorcised before long?
