Russo brothers reveal AVENGERS: ENDGAME scene that took a year to plan

THE Avengers: Finale directors, The Russo Brothers, brought us the epic ending of the Infinity Saga with his last two films. Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame were the culmination of more than a decade of films that introduced us to a group of superheroes who became like family as they battled the villains of the universe together.

Endgame was a huge undertaking, as it united not only the Avengers, but all the other MCU character groups we had seen in the first three phases. While it was the most important film the Russos have made to date, there was one scene in particular that was the most daunting.

The film’s finale ended with Tony Stark’s funeral. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) gave up his life to save the universe and needed a real goodbye. But the catch is, a funeral for the Avengers’ questionable leader would require every Avenger, plus Tony’s closest friends and family, to be in the same place at the same time. This makes for huge footage and also increases the likelihood of spoilers being revealed to waiting fans.

The Russos explained on the Smartless Podcast (via Cheatsheet):

“It took a year of planning. We called it marriage. It took a year to plan it and bring all those people together. We had a couple of months to plan that shoot. We tried that take. We have explored that location multiple times.

The filmmakers revealed they filmed the iconic scene on a ranch outside Atlanta. With each actor bringing their own trailer to the set, the base camp was bigger than anything they’d ever seen.

“I remember the day we sent a drone just to take back the base camp that day. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

They went on to say that there were well over 50 trailers on the ranch for the funeral scene. Given the number of people involved in the shooting, the directors went to great lengths to keep it a secret. To avoid leaks, the filmmakers told the cast that they were shooting a wedding scene between Tony and Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow).

Paltrow was one of the only ones who knew what was really going on, as she needed a little more time to prepare for the scene. But for most of the actors who arrived on set, they thought they were going to film a celebration. Spider-Man actor Tom Holland is a famous talker and spoke of believing this was a marriage until he saw the film at the premiere. But he wasn’t the only one deceived!

It would have been nice to see that scene acted out in person! But we can always go back and watch it in film.

Avengers: Finale is currently streaming on Disney+
