After appearing Spider-Man: There’s no way back home AND She-Hulk: Advocate, Charlie Cox is set to make his big comeback as Matt Murdock aka Daredevil in the upcoming Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again. Vincent D’Onofrio he will join him in that series as he returned as Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin.
Cox and D’Onofrio recently appeared together at ICCCon in Nashville and during a panel, Cox talked about his return to the Marvel Universe and how playing this new iteration of the character has been a “really strange” experience for he. He explained:
“It was really weird. And I’m older and so he’s older. So I think it was important … that he was part of it. I don’t necessarily know what I mean by that, but he’s been through more. He’s been through everything in Somehow, in some world, in some variant, he lived what we saw or not.
This definitely doesn’t look like the same take on Daredevil from the Netflix series. Yes, it’s the same actor playing him, but he has a different tone, at least from what we’ve seen in the She-Hulk series. Speaking about appearing in She-Hulk and what made him different, he said:
“But She-Hulk was really fun because one of the things we didn’t do a lot on the original show — he was so dark most of the time, he was so tortured that in the comics there was a lot of levity at times. There’s It’s been a lot of fun and he’s very charismatic and he’s a lot of fun at times. We haven’t done a lot of it. We haven’t had a lot of it.”
We still don’t really know what to expect from Daredevil: Born Again. Personally I was hoping for more of the tone of the original Netflix series, but I don’t think Marvel Studios will go that route. They’ve already made this tone shift with the character, and I think they’re going to keep it. Hopefully the story they tell is strong.
Cox and D’Onofrio will be joined in the series by Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, aka The Punisher. Other actors who have been cast in the series include Michael Gandolfini, Margarita LevievaAND Sandrine Holtwho will play Vanessa Fisk, Fisk’s wife. Michael Gaston (Chicago PD, Mayor of Kingstown) is also in the show.
The series was written and executive produced by Matthew Corman AND Chris Ord, and is expected to be released in spring 2024. Cuesta directs only the opening episode and other directors are lined up to direct the other blocks of episodes.
There are no details on what the story of the series will tell, but fans are extremely curious. During a previous interview, Charlie Cox offered some insight into what we can expect from his character, saying, “I don’t think it’s a different character. I just think it’s maybe a different time in his life. I don’t think my interpretation it’s going to change — they’ve cast the same actor. Are we saying this is a new… era, or variant? I haven’t read the scripts, so I don’t know. But like, is it part of the multiverse?”
Cox also previously shared that the series will be “a whole new thing,” saying, “I think the gist of it is that it’s a new beginning, it’s going to be different, it’s going to be totally different. It’s going to be new stories and new ideas. It’s a season 1, it’s not a season 4, so it’s a whole new thing. Which I think is the way to go. If you’re going to do it again, do it differently.
Are you looking forward to the new Daredevil series?
