Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai is now available to watch on HBO’s rebranded streaming service, Max. This is an animated series that I’ve been excited to watch because I’m a huge fan Gio Dante AND Steven Spielbergit’s classic Gremlins film franchise. It’s great that after all these years we’ll have an origin story for Gizmo!
In the series, James Hong assumes the role of Grandpa Wing. He also played Lo Pan in John Carpenteris the classic 1986 film Big trouble in Little Chinaand it seems that these two properties can be easily linked given the Chinese setting.
During the press conference for Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwaithe creative team was asked if there would be any easter eggs in the show, and it was revealed that there is a small one Big trouble in Little China Easter Egg.
It is explained that Grandpa Wing has a signature hand gesture, which is something Lo Pan has also used and fans will recognize. Showrunners Tze Chun he told CB, “I think there’s a little hand wave I snuck into, and we also have an Easter egg for each of James Hong’s other credits on the show. So keep an eye out!”
Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai is a period film set in 1920s Shanghai, and “the series reveals how 10-year-old Sam Wing – who becomes the future owner of the Mr. Wing store in the 1984 film – met the young Mogwai called Gizmo . They strike up a lifelong friendship as Wing attempts to return Gizmo to his family, encountering and sometimes battling monsters and colorful spirits from Chinese folklore. Meanwhile, the two and street thief Elle are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.
Have you already started watching the series? If so, are you having fun!?
