Quentin Tarantino he’s been pretty secretive about his tenth, and possibly final film since announcing it a few months ago. The director has previously said so The film critic a real film critic will follow. That was all we knew previously, but now Tarantino has divulged a little more. In a recent interview with Deadline, he explained it The film critic is set in California in 1977 “and is based on a guy who really lived, but was never really famous, and he was writing movie reviews for some porn rag”.
One of Tarantino’s tasks as a teenager was to load porn magazines into a vending machine and empty coins from the ATM. “All the other stuff was too cheesy to read, but then there was this porn rag that had a really cool movie page.”
The director didn’t want to reveal the name of the magazine, but according to The Movie Critic it will be called “The Popstar Pages”. I ask if the critic in question was “known”. Tarantino throws his head back: “Well, he was known if you read the pages of Popstar !!”
He explained:
“He wrote about mainstream films and was the second string critic. I think he was a very good critic. He was cynical as hell. His reviews were a cross between early Howard Stern and Travis Bickle’s [Robert DeNiro’s character in Taxi Driver] it could be if he was a film critic.
Sipping his juice, he added:
“Think of Travis’ journal entries. But the porn critic was very, very funny. He was very rude, you know. He swore. He used racial slurs. But the shit about him was really funny. He was rude as hell.
Tarantino researched the reviewer’s life.
“He wrote as if he were 55, but he was only 30. He died in his late thirties. It wasn’t clear for a while, but now I’ve done some more research and I think it was complications from alcoholism.”
No one was chosen. She acknowledged that there are no actors in her repertory company in that age range. Leonardo Dicaprio AND Brad Pitthe admitted, they’re too old for the part.
“I haven’t decided yet, but it’s going to be someone in the ballpark of 35. He will definitely be a new protagonist for me.
When pressed as to who it might be, he refused to say, saying, “I have an idea of someone I can imagine that does this really well,” but isn’t sure whether to give it to that person.
The film will enter pre-production next month and doesn’t have a release date yet, but will likely hit theaters in 2024.
