District 9 AND Elysium director Neill Blomkamp was an interesting and unexpected choice when he came on board to direct a film inspired by the hit racing game for PlayStation, Gran Turismo. I was really curious to see what she would do with it, and I liked what I saw in the first trailer that was released.

During a recent interview with Empire, the director shared why he wanted to direct this film saying, “I’m just obsessed with cars. Totally obsessed. So I thought, ‘Yeah, I should probably do this movie.’

When asked about this project falling into the sports genre, the director said, “I think it will probably eventually fall into that genre. I definitely don’t think of it that way, but I think it’s hard not to. It’s definitely the closest thing that I’ll never make a sports film, that’s for sure!”

The film has been described as “the ultimate teenager’s wish-fulfillment story Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become a real professional race car driver. Jann was able to translate the awesome of him Gran Turismo real-life gaming skills through a series of Nissan competitions, leading him to become a professional race car driver.

Speaking about the film, Blomkamp said, “They’re real actors, in real cars, on real race tracks, driving at breakneck speed. The lodestar for me was making a video game title with character work that pushed the film, even more than the racing. Although the racing is pretty darn intense too.

The film features a large ensemble cast including Orlando Bloom AND David Portwho will star in the film together with Archie Madekwe. The cast also includes Djimon Hounsou (Shazam!), Geri Halliwell-Horner (You are underground), Daniel Puig (Naomi), Maeve Courtier-Lilley (The Outpost), Emily Hartford (A Hollywood Christmas), Barroso pepper (Deep sea), AND Sang Heon Lee (XO, kitty).

Blomkamp is directing from a script by Jason Hall AND Zach Baylinwith PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash AND Carter Swan producing together Douglas Belgrade AND Dana Brunetti.

Game creator Kazunori Yamauchi and Hall are executive producers on the film, which Sony Pictures will release theatrically on August 11, 2023. Watch the trailer and tell us what you think!
