Oscar-nominated writer and director Paul Schradernewest movie, Master Gardener, completes what has been dubbed his “Lonely Man” trilogy. The director responsible for classics such as American gigolohis script for Taxi driver AND wild bulland his films First Reformed AND Card countercontinued to engage audiences and discuss his work, but one of the first films he wrote, Thunder rumbleit could get some sort of makeover.
Schrader explained to IndieWire Filmmaker Toolkit podcast that the film came up in a discussion with the director Quentin Tarantinowho is shooting his much-discussed tenth and possibly final film, The film critic. Tarantino has only said that the film is based on “a real critic, but it is not known … and I’m not going to tell you more.”
But Paul Schrader says Tarantino has expressed interest in being able to add elements of Thunder rumble to history. He explained:
“Quentino [Tarantino] – that may have changed – but about a month ago he was making a movie, it had something to do with cinema in the 70s. And part of that, she’ll be using clips from 70s movies, but she’ll also remake movies from the 70s. And he asked me, ‘Can I redo the ending of ‘Rolling Thunder?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, try it. I’d love to see you remake the ending of “Rolling Thunder”.’ He who knows if he will really do it or not. But it was something that tickled his imagination in a very Tarantino-esque way.”
