Gold Boosters was one of many projects that James Gunn AND Peter Safran announced as part of their lineup of movies and TV shows. Gold Boosters he’s a fun and charming character, and a film project has been in development at the studio for years.
It will eventually happen as a series under the leadership of James Gunn, and speaking of the project, he said: “This is an absolute fan favorite. It’s about a loser from the future, who uses basic future technology to return to the present and pretend to be a superhero. It’s a series like all other series for HBO Max.
He added, “Think of it basically as a superhero imposter syndrome story, and how do you handle that? How does he try to use this future technology to be loved by people today? And what’s really the basis of that and is it a study of the character. It’s going to be a very different kind of show, and we’re talking to an actor about that right now, and I think it’s going to happen.”
During a recent interview with CB, Seann William Scott (American Pie, Becky’s Wrath) shared that he’d like to play the role of Booster Gold for DC Studios, as it’s a role he can see himself in. When asked about acting in a comic book movie, he said:
“I definitely would. I’d love to. I think it would be fun to do a comic book movie. I think the first character that came to my mind was: Booster Gold could be very funny, but I think I’m too old for it. .. I don’t know if he should be younger, but that character, I was like, ‘That I might.’ I just don’t remember his age, but he was like, ‘This is a great character.'”
He went on to say, “Come on, James Gunn! Let’s go!” I can totally picture Scott as Booster Gold! I doubt that will happen, though, as I can see Gunn wanting to get younger with the character.
Booster Gold has the potential to be a super fun series and here are some additional character details:
Booster Gold, AKA Michael Jon Carter, was a soccer hero and celebrity in the 25th century who became publicly disgraced after being caught gambling on his own games. With his reputation tarnished, Carter stole super-powered relics from the past and traveled back in time, with the plan of becoming a famous superhero. Though he started out being arrogant, Booster eventually became a true hero.
Jamie Reyes is a teenager from El Paso, TX who, one night, fused with a piece of alien technology called the Scarab that was sent to Earth by an ancient cosmic race. The Scarab gives its host extraordinary powers and becomes a suit that endows the user with the ability to fly and a number of other powers. The technology was sent under the guise of helping budding civilizations, but the Scarab’s true mission was to slowly overtake the host’s consciousness and take over the world. Due to the damage caused by the trip, his technology and powers become symbiotically fused with Reyes, with Reyes’ consciousness intact. Reyes then uses the suit to fight crime as the Blue Beetle.
Booster and Blue Beetle frequently collaborate in the comics and are close allies, often involved in multiple comic shenanigans. The dynamic duo are also members of the Justice League and are now being tapped to appear in a future JL movie down the road.
