Jason Mamoathe evil character of Fast XDante Reyes received much praise from critics, saying it was one of the best parts of the film. For me… the character made me hate the movie even more. There was really nothing I liked about the character and he will be remembered as one of the worst villains of all time. This is just my opinion, if you were a fan of the character, sorry! It’s just something we’re going to have to disagree on.
The film features some of the worst dialogue and dialogue in the franchise. He definitely didn’t utilize the talents of some actors and the movie made it look like they had no talent! Anyway, apparently the character Dante was created on Momoa and the director Louis Letterier making each other laugh and also trying to make Vin Diesel laugh, and they were never going to break it. Leterrier shared in an interview with THR:
“[Jason Momoa and I] we met in this film and realized that making each other laugh was a great way to create Dante. So we rewrote the dialogue together. I’d say, “You should say charming” and then we’d add, “Very mean dad.” So we really enjoyed making each other laugh, and the extra point, the wild card of our game, was to make Vin laugh and break out of Dom Toretto’s character.”
“We tried really hard. Like when Dante calls Dom ‘asshole’, but Vin is so focused when he’s on set that it was impossible. And when we called cut, Vin was like, ‘Oh boy, you tried really hard! ‘ So we were like kids on set and it was absolutely fun.”
So, it seems to me that this whole character is a whole inside joke between Momoa and Leterrier. I can see how they were trying to do something unique and different with the character, but I just didn’t find it interesting at all. He definitely didn’t come off as the type of villain that anyone should really be afraid of. There were a few times in the movie where anyone could have easily killed him, but they never did! They just talked! Ugh.
