James Gunn has a long history of making superhero movies, but now he’s sharing what his favorite comic book movies are. He ranked these movies in a recent video interview with GQ and his list of movies from him might surprise you.
The five films (in order) Gunn lists are Dead Pool, Old boy (based on a manga), A history of violence1978 film by Richard Donner SupermanAND Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
This is a solid list of great movies, and it might surprise some of you that there isn’t a single Marvel Cinematic Universe movie on its list, but it does have a couple of Marvel movies there! However, I love it Old boy AND A history of violence I’m on his list. They are both fantastically made films. It also makes me happy to see Superman on the list.
When it comes to Old boyGunn said, “He reinvented action and truly ushered in the new era of Korean cinema, which has continued to this day. They probably still make the best action movies in the world. But as a movie, it’s just incredibly cinematic, incredibly colorful, really disgusting but also beautiful and shocking at the end.
Gunn also praised Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, calling it the first truly multiverse comic book film. “I think, you know, Into the Spider-Verse is really the first, you know, multiverse comic book movie. They did it so balanced and real. There weren’t as many plot holes as there are in many of these multiverse movies. They thought of everything and it was really tight.
