‘1982’: award-winning Nadine Labaki-starrer set for US theatrical release

Exclusive: Los Angeles-based Tricycle Logic produced Lebanese director Ovalid Muanes’ first feature film in the United States. 1982. The adult drama premiered at the 2019 Toronto Film Festival, where it won the NETPAC Award. It opens nationwide on June 10 at the Quad Cinema in New York and expands nationwide on June 24 in Los Angeles, followed by the summer. The New York date coincides with June 6, the 40th anniversary of the Lebanon War. (Watch the trailer below.)

The story takes place in an idyllic school in the mountains of Lebanon, the day before the impending invasion. It takes place over a day and follows the 11-year-old boy’s relentless aspiration to declare his love for him for a girl in his class. When the invasion breaks Beirut, it breaks down today, threatening the entire country and its unity. In the school microcosm, the film portrays a society torn between the desire for love and peace and a shattering ideological divide.

Other international releases include Mexico on May 26 via Tulip Pictures and Brazil on June 2 via Estudio Escarlate. Taiwan will travel to the United States on June 10 through A Really Good Film Co.

Among other awards 1982 It won the Cannes Ecrans Juniors Award of Cannes Cinéphiles 2021, the FIPRESCI El-Gouna International Film Festival and the UNICEF Award 2021. It was also Lebanon’s official nomination for the 92nd Academy Awards and holds the Murex D’Or, Best Lebanese Film Film Award for the past two years.
