Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage (Raising Arizona, Renfield) is a rather strange fellow. He’s known for his outlandish roles and method acting, and he’s known for saying some interesting things in interviews, but it all adds to the mystique of him.

His latest strange statement came in a recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where Cage participated in the show’s “Colbert Questionert” game. One of the questions asked concerned the actor’s first memory, and he answered true to form:
“Let me think. Listen, I know it sounds really weird and I don’t know if it’s true or not, but sometimes I think I can go all the way back to the womb and feel like I can see faces in the dark womb or something. I know which sounds powerfully abstract, but somehow it feels like maybe it happened.”
Cage knew this was an unusual concept and might not even be entirely accurate, so he went on to explain:
“Now that I’m no longer in the womb, I should guess that maybe it was the vocal vibrations that resonated with me at that stage. It’s going back in time. I don’t know. It occurs to me… I don’t know. I know though I remember been in utero, but that thought crossed my mind.”
I mean, who knows, it’s possible there are people who might have memory flashes that far away. It’s not likely, and studies have been done to disprove it, but a lot of people have said it, and who are we to dispute it? Either way, it’s a pretty interesting thought.
