Groff said in a statement: “I am so excited to step into the amazing mind of Russell T Davies and see the incredible Ncuti Gatwa rise into this iconic role.

Showrunner Russell T Davies added, “This is an incredible coup, and a great honor, to have such a huge star on our set. So lace up your space boots, it’s going to be a blast.

Doctor who will return in November 2023 with three special episodes that will see David Tennan return as the 14th Doctor to coincide with the show’s 60th anniversary, e Catherine Tate she will also return as Donna. The first episode of Gatwa will air during the holidays. After that, Ncuti Gatwa will take on the role of the 15th Doctor with his partner Ruby, who is played by Millie Gibson.

Davies opened up about the journey leading up to the introduction of the 15th Doctor: “If you thought David Tennant’s appearance came as a shocker, we have plenty more surprises to come. Ncuti’s path to the Fifteenth Doctor is filled with mystery, horror, robots, puppets, danger and fun. And how does that relate to the return of the wonderful Donna Noble? How, what, why? We give you a year to speculate, and then all hell will break loose.”

There is also a Doctor who spin-off series in the works that will focus on the military research organization UNIT, which has appeared various times in the franchise since 1968. That series will star Jemma Redgrave as Kate Stewart, who appeared in 10 episodes of Doctor who since 2012. The spin-off will focus on Stewart running the organization.

Speaking earlier about his spin-off plans, Davies said: ‘So I thought – without any criticism of the people who were running it at the time, because they were running it within BBC measures – it had come time for the next phase for Doctor Who. I thought the streaming platforms were ready, the spin-offs were ready; I always believed in spin-offs when I was there. I did Torchwood as a spin-off, The Sarah Jane Adventures as a spin -off. Those spin-off -offs dropped off when I left, and I can see why. And I left well after 2008, when money got scarce, I think it’s fair enough for the public service broadcaster that the money is spent on other things.”

Doctor who will premiere exclusively on the BBC for the UK and Ireland. Disney+ will be the exclusive home for new seasons of Doctor who.
