Samuel L. Jackson Says New Pic Of Nick Fury Looking Older In SECRET INVASION Helps Humanize His Character

A new photo has been released from the upcoming Marvel limited series, Secret invasionwhat features Samuel L.JacksonNick Fury’s character looks a little older than he’s ever been before. Over the years, the character reunited the Avengers, watched SHIELD fall apart, and nearly died before being snatched from existence and back again. He’s now facing an army of seriously unhappy Skrulls, the green-skinned shapeshifting aliens he met in 2019 Captain Marvelto whom he promised refuge and a new home – which, thirty years later, he still hasn’t delivered.

Secret invasion it’s a different kind of mission, and that means a different kind of Nick Fury. His signature costume of eyepatch, goatee and long black leather coat is removed, as shown in the new exclusive image above, and the Fury below is altogether more fragile than we’ve ever seen before .

Jackson recently sat down with Empire for their new worldwide exclusive issue, and said of Nick Fury:

“All of these things are part of a Nick Fury who is invulnerable. Here you have a guy showing his face and showing his age. It’s an opportunity to humanize someone everyone thinks is superhuman.”

Despite how long and often Fury has appeared on screen, we know relatively little about who is away from his duties as an Avengers shepherd. Secret invasionThe six-hour episodes give Jackson more room to explore that side of the character.

“I had to figure out some things and come up with some new things, which I’ve been trying to do for a while,” Jackson says. “It’s great to have the opportunity to find out who she was and to delve into the impact that her work actually has on her personal life.”

This new, softer side of Nick Fury is something producer Jonathan Schwartz also wanted to focus on, albeit in a more literal sense. Schwartz told Empire:

“One of the things we really wanted to bring to this show that makes it kind of unique in the Marvel universe is vulnerability. Nick Fury is only human, Maria Hill [Cobie Smulders] he is only human. One bullet could take them out. It’s something we don’t always get in the MCU. Bringing that level of tension and fear and vulnerability into one of our shows was really exciting.”

With all this talk of bullets and his line “One last fight” in the trailer, he might Secret invasion will this really be the end of Fury? Jackson hopes not.

“I love playing him and I love that they’re opening him up to all these other possibilities and all this life that he has. So I hope I’m not done, and in this new phase of the MCU I’ll just keep floating in and out of there somehow, somehow.

Let’s hope so! Secret invasion is streaming on Disney+ starting June 21st.
