The actor knew he wanted to break into the Marvel movie scene for a long time, so he went to every audition he was even remotely within reach for. He wasn’t even close to getting anything before his big break, and was on the verge of never going back to the grueling audition process, and he humorously explained his story about him on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, saying:
“I auditioned for Thor, but not even to be Thor – but to be one of the teammates, and I didn’t get called back. Usually they give you a little feedback and I remember the casting director saying, “Wow.” You really made a great choice there.’ Which is code for like, ‘Hey, cut the acting down there, kid.’ It got to the point where I was never going to audition for Marvel again. I was like, ‘This is stupid, I’m never going to be in a Marvel movie.'”
Pratt says he’s auditioned for nearly every Marvel film.
“I mean, everyone. Whatever came out that needed a guy who even remotely resembled me, I auditioned one way or another. And I’d send a tape and they’d be like, “No, we don’t need to see that,” or I’d go there and see them, they’d be like, “No, this is the last time we need to see you.”
While researching the cast of the original 2014 film, the director James Gunn he was invited to see Pratt. The initial audition didn’t go well, but Gunn worked with him to smooth out the rough edges. Ultimately, Pratt landed the role of Star-Lord, and the rest is history. This was the role of his career and has since led to his starring roles in all three films, as well as cameos in other Marvel films.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be released in theaters this week on May 5 and is being referred to by some as “one of the best Marvel films ever.” Already have your tickets?
