I had the chance to see the film adaptation of the best selling Bildungsroman Are you there God? It’s me, Margaret in the theater before its premiere this week, and it was amazing. Anyone who was a child (especially a girl) in the prime of adolescence from 1970 onwards has a good chance of having been shaped by this book by Judy Blume, about everything a child could face: from a dying body development, or lack thereof, to religion, crushes, friendships, questions about life itself, and the emotions and changes that come with reaching puberty.

This movie has it all covered. It took me back to when I first read the book about 30 years ago, and subsequent retellings, to raising my daughter, and even to the traumas and questions I continue to deal with or relive as an adult.
The film reminds us what a sometimes terrifying time it is to be a kid, while other moments like summer camp, a first kiss, a right of way, are all worth it.
I will definitely be re-watching this movie with my daughter and sister and recommend it to anyone who enjoys a slice of life story with humor, hardship and beautiful acting to put it all together. The filmmakers behind the film certainly understood what Blume has reached audiences with over the past 50 years, and I’m very grateful for that.
Go look Are you there God? It’s me, Margaret in theaters this Friday.
