Gio Russo, the co-director of some of Marvel’s biggest films, has some thoughts on the growing trend of artificial intelligence and explains what the future of storytelling looks like. AI technology is insanely wild stuff right now! It’s both scary and exciting to see how this technology is evolving.

During a recent panel at the Sands International Film Festival, Russo was on stage with Epic Games Chief Creative Officer Donald Mustard, and they were there to talk about the future of storytelling in film, TV, and video games. During the conversation, AI was brought up and asked how technology will affect all of these mediums. Russo said this was a “mind-blowing question” and then dove into his thoughts:
“We’re not in a world where, you know, your uncle doesn’t know how to send email anymore. We’re in a world where the whole generation is easy on the subject and not even afraid of it.”
He then moves on to discussing how AI could, and very likely, will be used to create stories that say:
“Potentially, what you could do with it is obviously use it to design the narrative and change the narrative. So you have an ever-changing story, in a game or a movie or a TV show.”
While some artists, writers, and filmmakers might find it scary, the concept of what it might do to expand custom stories is fascinating and interesting. But then Russo took things to another level of madness, sharing another view:
“You could walk into your house and save the AI on your streaming platform. ‘Hey, I want a movie with my photoreal avatar and Marilyn Monroe photoreal avatar. I want it to be a rom-com because I’ve had a tough day “, and makes for a very competent story with dialogue that mimics your voice. Suddenly you now have a romantic comedy with you that is 90 minutes long. Then you can curate your story especially for you.”
It’s not hard to imagine that it could actually happen, and it’s madness! I love it and hate it at the same time! I’m actually very conflicted with AI because I see the benefits of it, but I also see how it could destroy the world, so… you know.
As for when we might see something like this, Russo said, “How quickly we get there, I don’t know, but that’s where it’s going.”
What do you think about this vision of AI in the future!? Will you embrace him or fight him!?
