Halyna Hutchins’ family is suing Alec Baldwin, although the charges have been dropped

After Thursday’s confirmation that Alec Baldwin will no longer be prosecuted in the death of Halyna Hutchins, the family of rust The cameraman will file a civil lawsuit against Baldwin, who held the cotton gun that fired the bullet that killed Hutchins on set in October 2021.

Attorney Gloria Allred, who represents Hutchin’s mother Olga Solovey, father Anatolii Androsovych and sister Svetlana Zemko, said Friday her clients “remain hopeful,” asserting:

“Mr. Baldwin can pretend he wasn’t responsible for pulling the trigger and firing a bullet that ended Halyna’s life. He can run to Montana and pretend he’s just an actor in a movie about the Wild West, but in real life he can’t escape the fact that he played a major role in a tragedy that has repercussions for real life does not.

Baldwin’s lawyers have called their actions “deceptive” and are unlikely to face legal scrutiny. Baldwin, both star and producer of the film, had previously struck a deal with Hutchins’ widower, details of which remain private, but the latter was named executive producer of the film, which has now resumed production in Montana.

Director Joel Souza issued a statement calling the move “bittersweet” and vowing to complete the film “in the name of Halyna.” No “working firearms” or ammunition will be allowed on set for the film, which is expected to wrap in May.

Baldwin was scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on May 3, but the charges were dropped Thursday after prosecutors received “other information.” The film’s gunsmith, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, still faces two counts of involuntary manslaughter.
