The film is based on the journalist’s book of the same name David Grann, the story “traces the investigation into the serial killings that plagued the Osage Nation during the 1920s after oil was discovered on their land. The murders prompted the fledgling FBI to investigate.” Leonardo Dicaprio AND Lily Glastone stars as married couple Ernest and Mollie Burkhart. The cast also includes Robert DeNiro AND Jesse PlemonAND Brendan Fraser.
Here is a description of the story: “In the late nineteenth century, the Osage Indians were driven onto a supposedly worthless stretch of land in northeastern Oklahoma. But their turf turned out to be atop one of the largest oil fields in the United States; to get that oil, prospectors had to pay the tribe rents and royalties. By the 1920s, Osage Nation members had become the wealthiest people per capita in the world. And then the Osage started dying under mysterious circumstances.”
Screenwriter Eric Rot spoke about the film, saying, “This was a unique story that I knew nothing about. It showed my ignorance. I thought, “That’s amazing, it could be a western.” Marty has never done a western. It’s the first time you’ll see a street scene where there are 90% Indigenous Native Americans and 1 or 2% Caucasians.”
Roth also shares the use of “a lot of Western tropes” in the story. He even teased something special planned for the end credits, saying, “I’ve come up with an amazing way to do the end credits, that you’ve never seen. The other day he texted me: “I’ll be shooting our end credits in a couple of days.” I was so happy that he was doing it.
Roth also said the film is “nothing we’ve ever seen” and that it will be “one for the ages”. He explained, “I know Marty is trying to make a movie that’s probably the last Western that would be made this way, and yet, with this incredible social document underneath, and the violence and the setting. I think it’s going to be something we’ve never seen, in a way. And so this is, to me, one for the ages.
It seems that this will be a real cinematic masterpiece.
