The LEGO Batman Movie (2017) was a huge success. It garnered critical and fan acclaim, as well as a big box office hit, guaranteeing a guaranteed sequel, but LEGO has since ended its partnership with Warner Bros. and landed at Universal, leaving the movie characters in limbo.

This means that unfortunately we will not see a sequel to the film, but the director Chris McCay offered fans a little taste of what we might have expected to see in the second film. In a recent interview with Uproxx, McKay explained:
“We had a really fun script with Dan Harmon and Michael Waldron, we wrote a really fun type of Superfriends. The sequel would have been almost a Superfriends movie and the structure would have been a kind of Godfather II with Batman and the Justice League dealing with a modern day problem, Lex Luthor and OMAC, while at the same time going backwards. to the reasons why Batman and the Justice League – and Superman in particular – have bad blood. It would have explored Superman and Batman’s relationship in a far different way than you’ve ever seen it portrayed, including Superman’s alienation from humanity and how difficult it is to truly be friends, true friends, for years. In the end he would have answered the question: how do you become super friends. And there would have been a crossover with a major franchise that can only happen in a LEGO Movie.
It’s such a shame this movie can’t be made! The LEGO Movies have been a really fun franchise and LEGO Batman deserved a second movie to round out the story. Oh well, maybe someday.
