During today’s big Star Wars Celebration event, Lucasfilm showed a first look at the upcoming series Star Wars: The Acolyte. This is a project that has me very intrigued and we learned some new details about it.

Mark Hamill and his Return of the Jedi helix lightsaber reunite in Pop Culture Quest Clip
The story is set in the High Republic era and the story is described as “a mystery thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of dark secrets and emerging dark side powers in the last days of the High Republic era. A former Padawan reunites with his Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes, but the forces they face are more sinister than they ever anticipated.” The series is set 100 years before the franchise’s prequel trilogy. The era of the High Republic is known as the Golden Age of the Jedi, a time when the ancient order was at its height.
The cast of the series includes Amanda Stenberg (The hate you give), Lee Jung-jae (Squid game), Manny Hyacinth (The Good Place), Carrie-Anne Moss (The matrix), Daphne Keen (His dark matters), Charlie Barnett (Russian doll), Rebecca Henderson (Invent Anna), Dean-Charles Chapman (1917), AND Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen and slim).
Leslye Promontory (Russian doll) created the series and speaking of the project he described it as “Frozen meet Kill Bill.” He also revealed that that story will be told from the point of view of the villains and is set between the High Republic and the start of the prequel trilogy, “because that’s when the villains are outnumbered.”
The series has been described as a “spiritual war” and includes conflicts between siblings and parents as well as a conflict between a master and an apprentice. It has been reiterated that the project is very inspired by samurai films. It is said to focus on the emergence of the Sith, a group of Dark Jedi bent on conquering the galaxy. The term ‘acolyte’ was used in the Star Wars universe to describe the soldiers of the mighty Sith Lords.
In the shared footage, Stenberg’s character attempts to kill a Jedi Master, played by Carrie-Anne Moss. It has also been revealed that Joonas Suotamo, who played Chewbacca in the sequel trilogy, will be playing a new Wookie character, Kel Naka.
Gizmodo shared a more detailed description of the footage, which “began with a group of young people, all kinds of humans and aliens, being trained by a Jedi Master in bright white robes played by Lee Jung-jae. ‘Close your eyes. Your eyes can deceive you. We must not trust them,” he says as we see a very dilapidated and crowded village where a hooded figure walks along the road. ‘The Force is powerful. It is a power that we must respect,’ the Jedi master continues the speech. Inside a cafe is seated a Jedi, played by Carrie-Anne Moss. For some reason, the Jedi and this hooded figure, played by Stenberg, begin to fight. Stenberg’s character looks like a ninja, complete with a black mask covering the part lower face.
“The rest of the footage plays mostly in montage – we see footage inside what looks like a Jedi temple. Several young Jedi (Keen and Barnett) sneak into confined spaces. Someone is scaling the side of a temple. There is a scene in the snow. A Neimoidian appears. And finally, Stenberg’s character says during editing, ‘It’s not about good or evil. It’s about power. And who’s allowed to use it.’ The final shot is about eight Jedi standing in the woods, with Jung-jae’s character in the center, he ignites his lightsaber, and then all the other Jedi join him, lighting up their own blades all different colors The vibes we had were kind of a samurai movie mixed with a heist movie, but with a lot of Jedi.
It looks fantastic! I can’t wait to see the footage for myself! The series is still filming. Excited about this?
