Amazon Orders TV Series Adaptation of 1990s Movie CRUEL INTENTIONS

Amazon Studios has announced that they are moving forward with a series adaptation of the 1999 film Cruel intentionswhich is based on the classic novel dangerous liaisons. The streamer has ordered an eight-episode series for the adaptation, which will likely be released via Freevee, Amazon’s free streaming service, though it could potentially switch to Prime Video.

The series was said to follow two ruthless step brothers who would do anything to stay at the top of the social pyramid. In this case, their focus is the hierarchy of Greek life at an elite Washington, DC college. After a brutal hazing incident threatens the entire pan-Hellenic system, they will do anything to preserve their power and reputation, even attempting to seduce the daughter of the Vice President of the United States.

In 2016, NBC ordered a pilot sequel to the film with Sarah Michelle Gellar, one of the film’s original stars, wanted to reprise her role as Kathryn Merteuil. However, she ultimately did not make it to the series. Prior to that, Fox attempted to a Cruel intentions prequel series, which was canceled before airing. Three episodes of that show were eventually assembled to become the direct-to-video film cruel intentions 2 in 2001. In 2004, Sony Pictures produced a second direct-to-video sequel, Cruel intentions 3.

Neal H. Moritz, who produced the first three Cruel intentions film through its Original Film banner, was originally slated to executive produce the new series with Pavun Shetty. He and Shetty also served as executive producers on the NBC pilot. The reimagined version of the series would be written and executive produced by Phoebe Fisher with Sara Goodman.
