Looks like we’re not on Schmigadoon anymore… Season 2 of the Apple TV+ musical comedy Schmigadoon! it will take your audience out of the golden age of the 40’s and 50’s and into the dark, murderous musicals of the 60’s and 70’s! Think: Cabaret, Hair, Sweeney Todd Obviously, Chicagolike our favorite Josh (Keegan Michael Key) and Melissa (strong cecilia) come across the land of Schmicago while looking for their beloved Schmigadoon.
When the first season of the uplifting series premiered, the world was in the midst of a global pandemic, Broadway was closed, and the show treated music lovers and beyond to the pinnacle of a long-awaited trip around the world. Now, as we continue to return to our new normal, the show sings a different but still important song with Season 2. “I think now the show has gained some audience and people have loved the first season, and now you’re expanding the world, right? I think the world of season two is much bigger, and the show is just a bigger, more ambitious show.” Aron Tveitwho plays this season as Topher, he said hollywood life in an EXCLUSIVE interview. “I hope people who might not necessarily be ‘just’ theater buffs can participate a little more this time around, because it’s a darker, grittier story. So I think oddly it has a broader appeal this time around.
where Cameron, whose Jenny brings out Sally Bowles Cabaretechoed the sentiments of his co-stars and praised the creator of the show, five Paul. “I also think it’s brilliant, and Aaron has said it before about musicals being a kind of ‘Trojan horse’; to the emotional lessons we all need to learn… you don’t even realize you’re taking an emotional rush all the way,” the singer told HL. “Five does it so brilliantly in a six-episode arc. And finally, even though I was reading the scripts, I’m crying. I feel complete. They took me on a journey. I think that’s what’s so special and what I think we’ve been lucky enough to really be a big part of our careers are these larger-than-life characters in these larger-than-life worlds dealing with very human issues.”
She continued, “As an audience, she allows us to escape into her world and forget who we are. But then, eventually, it brings us back to ourselves and we are somewhat recalibrated. I think Cinco did a great job this time, and I think it’s always necessary and relevant.”

Dove compared her Jenny Banks roles this season to her Season 1 Betsy McDonough and found some interesting parallels, as well as differences, looking back. “My character in Season 1 was this very sexist projection of commentary about what a woman should have been at the time these musicals were being written. But it’s interesting because she was very aware of what she was doing with these men, which is also the narrative being written by men about women at the time. It was like she knew what she was doing, she’s a bitch and I’m a good man from a good family. I think it’s interesting because it was a great commentary on the value of women and their ‘purity’,” she recalled.
Looking at Jenny Banks, Dove admitted the role is still a “commentary” on how women were portrayed in the 60s and 70s, but there are some clear differences that need to be questioned. “The character of Sally Bowles was so revolutionary and this incredibly flawed woman, but also a woman who was in charge of her own sexuality, a woman who was deeply, deeply flawed and traumatized, but at the same time, there’s really an inversion of conscience,” he theorized. “Sally Bowles is deceptively unaware of herself, as if she wants too much from the world around her and tries to use everything she has to get it, but she is very childish in her efforts. I think it’s an interesting shift that these characters have gone through. I wonder if this is a commentary on how we view women across the ages, across the decades.”
The first two episodes of Schmigadoon! Season 2 arrives on Apple TV+ on April 5.
