The short’s story focuses on Miles Morales, who is struggling to “balance his responsibilities as teenager, friend and student while playing the friendly superhero of the Brooklyn neighborhood. After a particularly busy day living under these pressures, Miles suffers a panic attack that forces him to confront manifestations of his anxiety and to learn that asking for help can be as brave an act as protecting his city from evil.

It sounds like a great story and something a lot of us can relate to. I know how to fight that anxiety monster all too well. It’s a constant battle.

The short film is part of the new LENS (Leading and Empowering New Storytellers) mentorship program from Sony Pictures Animation and Sony Pictures Imageworks. The new program “aims to provide high-potential candidates from underrepresented groups an opportunity to gain valuable leadership experience.”

This project was created by Jarelle Dampier, Khaila Amazan, Clare Chan AND Joe Darko under the guidance of program creators and producers Michelle Raimo Kouyate (Puss in Boots, Positive Sides Playbook) AND David Schulenburg (Spider-Ham: caught in a ham).

Kouyate and Schulenburg said in a statement, “We are honored and privileged to have had the opportunity to shape the inaugural launch of the LENS program. We are incredibly proud of how the hard work of all four filmmakers – Jarelle Dampier, Khaila Amazan, Clara Chan and Joe Darko – has paid off. They far exceeded all expectations as they stepped into their leadership roles and created an amazing short film. We are very grateful to be part of a studio that is doing significant work to give a voice to various groups and studio leadership – Kristine Belson, Michelle Grady, Pam Marsden and Paul Martin – who originated this program and supported us at every step along the way.”

LENS filmmakers who were part of the program said in a joint statement: “The LENS program has changed the lives of all of us – it has allowed us to reach a goal that we felt was very far away. Seeing different representation in leadership roles really makes a difference because it shows the next generation of filmmakers that barriers are breaking down. Animation is the most collaborative art form there is, and it holds a special place to open its doors and encourage creatives who have the potential to tell great stories, but haven’t had a chance to shine. We are so grateful for this experience and the opportunity to create something meaningful, and we can’t wait to share it with the world.”

The animated short will debut exclusively at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival this June. I imagine it will be released for everyone at some point.
