Mark Hamill discussed the greatest joy and greatest difficulty of being involved in STAR WARS

An old interview with Mark Hammill from 1988 recently resurfaced, and in it he talks about his life, acting career and Star Wars. There’s a ton of cool stuff, so I went through it and thought it might be fun to share some stuff.

One thing Hamill was asked in the interview regarding being a part of a franchise as big as Star Wars, had been the greatest joy and the greatest difficulty for him who had been involved in it. His answer came ten years after the first film came out, so she had some time to reflect, but it was also a pretty fresh feeling for him. First he talked about the difficult aspect of film shooting:

“The biggest difficulty or problem is trying to remember the scope of the thing and where you are. Also, the film was so technical in the sense that much of it was dubbed and looped due to sound issues that it was difficult go to the studio again and make it look as natural as it did when you did it on set.

Yeah, that sounds like that would be kind of a pain in the ass to do, but you gotta do what you gotta do to finish the movie! As for the joys to be involved with Star Wars, it was all about the kids! He explained:

“On the other hand, one of the greatest joys is how the children have taken it to heart. Young people find it so magical. It surprises me because there are kids that aren’t even born other movies like The Wizard of Oz that have this kind of cult following but it’s pretty mind boggling.

This is definitely something we can all relate to. The first Star Wars movie I saw as a child was Return of the Jedi at the drive-in theater and there are still flashes of memories of that in my head like the Speeders racing through the forest on Endor. I remember seeing this as a kid and thinking it was the coolest thing ever! This is the film that captured me Star Wars, and never let go. It’s amazing how a movie like that has that kind of power. Hamill went on to say:

“You forget about it and suddenly you are faced with it. You know, I’ll drop my kid off at school and something will happen and I realize, “Yeah, even today it still has an impact.” And that surprises me because I haven’t seen the movies for a long time. But when I walk into a video store and there it is on a big screen, it’s really amazing. It really doesn’t feel that long ago and yet you look at yourself and go, ‘Damn, have I ever looked like that?’ It’s like looking at old high school photos.

And the franchise is still going strong after all these years! It definitely left a lasting impact! Now other directors are continuing thing George Luke started. Some of them are doing great things that fans love! Some are doing things that give fans something to complain about.
