It has now been reported that the film will be directed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson. Last year he won an Academy Award for Best Documentary for Summer of the Soulwhich covered the 1969 Harlem cultural festival. Questlove is also a founding member of Philadelphia hip-hop band The Roots.
The Aristocats seems like a surprising and interesting choice for the director, and it will be a live-action/hybrid reimagining of the film. He will direct from a script written by Gluck and Bunin, and the film will be produced by Tarik Trot, Shawn Gee AND Zara Zohlman.
The original film follows a family of aristocratic cats, “the mother Duchess and her three kittens Berlioz, Marie and Toulouse, who live a life of luxury in Paris. But when their owner’s butler discovers that the cats are destined to receive a huge fortune, he kidnaps them and abandons them in an unknown land: the countryside. The aristocats must then befriend a stray cat, named Thomas O’Malley, to help them get home before the butler steals what is rightfully theirs.
This wouldn’t be Questlove’s first time working for Disney, as he had a role in Pixar’s animated film Soul. The Aristocats it was one of those disney movies that never really hit me, so i really have no interest in what happens with this remake.
What do you think of Questlove jumping on board to direct the film?
