Shiv and Tom’s marriage was on a precipice from the very beginning, but their relationship plunged to dark depths after Tom (matthew macfadyen) betrayed Shiv (sara snook) and sided with Logan (Brian Cox) inside Succession season 3 finale. In the season 4 premiere, Shiv and Tom barely speak to each other after their showdown in Italy.

They are forced to confront each other when Shiv returns home to get some of his belongings. He confronts Tom about his escapades with Greg and alleged dating with models. Tom says they’ve agreed they can “test the waters” during this split.
Tom figured that eventually they would have an honest discussion about what happened and their future. Shiv, clearly upset, tells Tom that she doesn’t want to “put out a bunch of non-profit nonsense”.
Tom keeps trying to talk to Shiv, but she refuses. “I don’t think it does me any good to hear all of this. I think it might be time for you and me to move on,” Shiv admits, hinting that she wants a divorce. She doesn’t want to get into all of her marriage issues because she won’t make a difference.

While Tom is more than willing to deal with his feelings and the whole mess of his problem, this is where Shiv atrophies. She thinks it’s time to “stand tall and say good luck.” However, her eyes are failing her. She is crying but she doesn’t want to show it to Tom. She’s never felt comfortable showing her emotions about her to Tom…or anyone else.
Tom tells Shiv he could see if he can make love to her, but she rejects him. She asks him if she stays or goes. Tom awaits your response. Shiv says that she is tired and will stay the night but she tells Tom that she can stay too.
“So that’s it, huh?” Tom says. Despite all the flaws in his marriage, Tom is sad as it seems to be the end. They’re in bed together, but at different angles so they can’t see what’s clearly written on their faces: heartbreak.
“We gave it a chance,” Shiv says through tears. Tom grabs her hand. “Yes, we tried,” she replies. Though she has never taken Tom’s feelings seriously and has always taken them for granted, Shiv can’t forget that Tom informed Logan of his plan with Kendall and Roman to prevent his father from getting an absolute majority and moving forward. .

Shiv and Tom’s divorce (if it comes to fruition) will have lasting implications. Earlier in the episode, Shiv was quick to tell Nan Pierce that she was divorcing Tom after her Nan expressed concerns that Tom was one of Logan’s closest allies at the moment.
Tom will be absolutely concerned about how his divorce will affect his relationship with Logan. Tom tried to broach the subject with Logan at his birthday party, but Logan never gave him an answer. In the end, Shiv is still Logan’s daughter. Logan may find he no longer needs Tom and push him aside. That would really leave Tom with absolutely nothing. Except Greg, of course.
