Jane Fonda remembers The Drew Barrymore Show Memories of films from her acting career. As an image from the 2005 rom-com Clean sample Fonda recalled the infamous slap scene to Jennifer Lopez that injured her.
“The first thing that comes to mind is that we have a slap scene — I hit her, she hit me…” Fonda recalled. “Well, Jennifer, according to Jennifer, she had a big diamond ring and when she hit me one time, it cut open above my eye – my eyebrow.”
Fonda continued, “And she never apologized.”
Clean sample Directed by Robert Luketic and written by Anya Kochoff, it follows aspiring fashion designer Charlie (Lopez) who must face her mother-in-law, played by Fonda, who will do anything to destroy her relationship with her son. The film marks Fonda’s return to film after a 15-year absence since the release of Stanley and Iris in 1990.
The comedy also starred Michael Vartan, Wanda Sykes, Adam Scott, Monet Mazur, Annie Parisse, Will Arnett, Elaine Stritch and Stephen Dunham. According to IMDB, Clear sample had a budget of $43 million and grossed over $155 million worldwide.
During her appearance on the daytime talk show promoting her latest film Continue Fonda also reminisced about filming with Lily Tomlin barbara and talk about what happened behind the scenes in the opening scene where she does a strip dance in space.
“I hate being naked in front of anyone. I was drunk,’ she said. “My husband [director Roger Vadim] promised me that my various genitalia would be covered by the titles of the film – he lied, he didn’t actually do that.”
Fonda continued: “Just before the end of this horrible experience, a bat flew between me and the camera. The next day we had to redo everything. We didn’t know it happened until we saw the rushes. With a hangover I had to do it all over again.”
