Chris Pratt has gotten a lot of shit since the first trailer was released for The Super Mario Bros. Movie and everyone heard his voice for Mario. I think fans were expecting a more Italian sounding voice, similar to the character from the Super Mario Bros. franchise, but instead we got a voice that sounded more or less like Chris Pratt.

In a recent interview with The BBC One Show, which you can check out below, Pratt and his co-star Charlie Daywho voices Luigi in the film, was asked about the vocal situation, and Pratt explained:
“There are only a few things we ever hear Mario say, like ‘Wahoo!’ and that kind of thing. ‘It’s me! Let’s go!’ So we were trying to figure out a way to put that in the film, but in a way that was congruent with a storyline about these working-class American kids in Brooklyn.
Day agreed, telling Pratt, “Yeah, you can’t say ‘It’s me!’ for 90 minutes” because “after 10 minutes we know it’s you”.
I guess it makes sense that a voice that only does slogans might be difficult to translate into an everyday conversational voice. It’s funny because you can hear Pratt do the impersonation, and it sounds like he would have been able to transition while he does the vocals quite well, but maybe he sounded weird. I guess we just have to take what we can get and enjoy the movie for what it is. It still looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun, even if Mario plays a little less like the Mario game, and a little more like Chris Pratt.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be released in theaters on April 5th.
