Lucy Liu is making his big comic book movie debut at DC’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods. She takes on the role of the villain Kalypso, one of Atlas’ three daughters, who comes to Earth to reclaim the power that powers Shazam. Elena Mirren AND Rachel Zegler play the other two daughters.

During a recent interview with The Cut, Liu was asked about acting in a superhero film for the first time at 54 and said she wished it had happened earlier in her career because it would give her more opportunities. She explains:
“If it had happened earlier, it would have been miraculous. It would have been a different story; my career would have been easier. There would have been more opportunities.”
While I understand what she’s saying, I just want to point out that I’m a fan of Liu and love the roles she’s been able to play throughout her career! One of my all time favorites was O-Ren Ishii in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill trilogy. It was better than any superhero movie role she could have gotten at the time! She was so badass in that movie!
Her big breakout role in the film, however, was Alex Munday starring alongside her Cameron Diaz AND Drew Barrymore in the 2000s Charlie’s Angels. Speaking of that character, he said:
“That character, Alex, was important to the composition of the three of us, whether or not that movie did well. It’s really the visuals that can help push the next thing. And I say visual because even if a film doesn’t do well, start moving the needle a little bit in the direction you want it to go. Not just for yourself, but for others.”
Even though Lui didn’t get to star in a superhero movie when she was 20, she has quite a career and I can’t wait to see what she ends up doing next! Someone needs to build some kind of action franchise around her!
