Not long after dropping out, Affleck explained that one of the reasons he walked away The Batman film he was developing, it was for spillover issues. Now, in a recent interview with THR, he’s getting brutally candid about why he dropped out The Batmanand another reason was that Justice League it was the worst experience of his film career. He said:
“You could give a seminar on all the reasons why this is the way not to. From manufacturing to bad decisions to horrific personal tragedy, and ending up with the most monstrous taste in your mouth.”
He kept expanding his nightmare Justice League experience and what it was like Joss Whedon fly to save them. He explains that the whole thing was heartbreaking:
“But I was going to direct a ‘Batman,’ and [‘Justice League’] it made me say, ‘I’m out. I never want to do any of this again. I’m not suitable.’ It was the worst experience she has ever seen in a company full of crap experiences. She broke my heart. There was someone’s idea [Joss Whedon] coming in, like, ‘I’m going to bail you out and we’re going to do 60 days of shooting and I’m going to write a whole thing about what you’ve got. I have the secret.’ And that wasn’t the secret. It has been difficult”.
He’s definitely not holding back on how he truly feels. Everyone involved in that production seemed to have a great time. The thing that was so poorly handled and tasteless. No wonder Affleck doesn’t want to go back and direct a DC movie James Gunn! The whole thing just left a rancid taste in his mouth.
It sucks that his experience was so bad it kept him from making his Batman movie. I liked Affleck’s Batman and wanted to see his Batman movie. But I also think he made the right choice for her mental health and his well-being.
The actor also discussed his past drinking problems and recalls the thoughts that ran through his head during filming Justice League :
“‘This is not the life I want. My children are not here. I am unhappy.’ You want to go to work and find something interesting to hold on to, rather than just wearing a rubber suit, and most of the time you just stand in front of your computer screen and say, “If this nuclear waste breaks free, we’ll… It’s fine. I’m not sharing or putting it down, but I’ve gotten to a point where I’ve found it creatively unsatisfying. Also, you’re sweaty and exhausted. . And I no longer want to squander my life, of which I have a limited amount.
Affleck appears as Batman in The flash for about five minutes, and in those five minutes Affleck says he “finally figured out how to play that character [Batman], and nailed it. After that, I don’t expect to ever see Affleck in any sort of DC project again.
The flash will be released in theaters on June 16, 2023
