Shalhoub shared the exciting news while a guest on Dr. Loubna Hassanieh’s Unheard Stories: Stories That Inspire, saying:

“We’re going to – not sure if I’m doing a spoiler alert here – but we’re doing a Monk 90 minute streaming movie. And we’ll start shooting it in May. It’s post-COVID Monk, so he’s in trouble [laughs]. We’re bringing everyone back, all the characters and doing a 90 minute stream [movie] for Peacock.”

Some of the other characters in the series include his original assistant Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram), Captain Leland Stottlemeyer (Ted Levi), Lieutenant Randy Disher (Jason Gray-Stanford), and his second assistant Natalie Teeger (Traylor Howard) and his daughter Julie (Emmy Clark).

The Monk series ended after running eight seasons in 2009, so after 15 we will have another chapter in the Monk saga and I can’t wait!

In 2020, Shalhoub briefly revived his character for a “Monk in Quarantine” segment on Peacock’s Variety show at home. After that, the actor said there was a “good chance” he would reprise his role in a Television Monk movie, and now it’s happening! So, that’s great!

There’s no information on what the story will involve, but there was an attempt to make a film in 2012 and one idea would have seen Monk get married and go to France, “only to have his new wife try to kill him.” that idea was scrapped “for creative reasons”, a second script titled “Mr. Monk for Mayor” was written, and would have seen Monk’s stepdaughter Molly “become an investigative reporter like her mother and want to expose a scandal to City Hall. But the only way to get that information is to get into the mayor’s office…hence Monk’s decision to run for mayor.”

That film was never made because its $6 million budget was too high. Regardless, we’re now getting a Monk movie and I’m sure it’s going to be entertaining! Are you happy to hear that we are receiving a Monk movie?!
