Not long ago, Doctor who showrunner Russell T. Davies teased that there were others Doctor who spin-off shows on the way, and now we’ve learned the details of one that’s currently in development.
The first of the new spinoffs will focus on the military research organization UNIT, which has appeared multiple times in the franchise since 1968. That series will star Jemma Redgrave as Kate Stewart, who appeared in 10 episodes of Doctor who since 2012. The spin-off will focus on Stewart running the organization.
The character can also appear in Doctor who Christmas special later this year together with the new Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa. David Tennan AND Catherine Tate will also be present in three Doctor who 60th Anniversary Specials.
Speaking earlier about his spin-off plans, Davies said: ‘So I thought – without any criticism of the people who were running it at the time, because they were running it within BBC measures – it had come time for the next phase for Doctor Who. I thought the streaming platforms were ready, the spin-offs were ready; I always believed in spin-offs when I was there. I did Torchwood as a spin-off, The Sarah Jane Adventures as a spin -off. Those spin-off -offs dropped off when I left, and I can see why. And I left well after 2008, when money got scarce, I think it’s fair enough for the public service broadcaster that the money is spent on other things.”
Davies hoped to build the Doctor who franchise the way Marvel has done with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He has big goals and big aspirations, and it would be interesting and cool if he could actually pull it off!
He previously attempted this when he rebooted Doctor who in 2005 with spinoffs by Torchwood AND The Sarah Jane Chronicles. He previously explained, “I was in the middle of running an empire, and my god I did it 10 years too soon, didn’t I?”
He went on to say, “There should be a Doctor who channel now. You look at those Disney ads, all the new ones Star Wars and Marvel shows, you think, we should be sitting here announcing The Adventures of Nissa OR The return of Donna Noble, and you should have the Tenth and Eleventh Doctor together in a 10-part series. Sincerely. You laugh, but you did Star Trek Did fans ever think they’d get a Captain Pike series? Never? It’s insane. The whole sci-fi world is so creative and so profitable right now, I think your wildest dreams can come true.”
So now he’s going to try and with Disney now backing him, he has the wherewithal to do so.
