In 2020, Jeff Lemir (Gideon falls), Matt Kindt (BLAST!), AND David Reuben (Ether) launched a Kickstarter for their graphic novel Cosmic detective. Now, Image Comics has announced that it is collaborating with these creatives to release a paperback edition of the graphic novel for more people to enjoy. In the graphic novel, readers will explore an epic sci-fi mystery that follows a detective investigating the murder of a god. It already looks pretty incredible.

Cosmic Detective is an epic sci-fi mystery that asks: when a God is murdered, who solves the crime? Enter our detective. The assassination of a god threatens to tear apart the very fabric of our reality. Only our detective stands in the way of total destruction. But will the mystery he uncovers be worse than the disaster he’s trying to avert? And will his mind crack under the revelations he’s about to discover before he can do anything about it?

Speaking about the project, Lemire said:

Matt Kindt has been one of my closest friends since I’ve been in comics and we’ve collaborated before, but never on a creator owned project where we could just go crazy and push each other in the funniest ways we could imagine . And there was only one artist who could somehow translate all of our cosmic madness, David Rubin. Cosmic Detective was a blast from start to finish and David made it one of the best books he’s ever been a part of.

Kindt shared:

Jeff and I had a lot of fun coming up with this story, but there was a moment in the process while working with David where it was clear that David was possessed of an otherworldly energy and we just got out of the way and tried not to melt us from its expelled cosmic radiation.

Ruby added:

Working on Cosmic Detective has been a true gift as an artist; that the pages are full of surprises and energy. I hope that all the energy and love we put into that book reaches the hearts of readers: this is a love letter to them, to people who love comics and also to Jack Kirby.

You can’t wait to read Cosmic detective from your local comic book store on Sept. 13, and from your favorite bookstores and Indigo on Sept. 19. Lemire and Kindt wrote the story with Reuben providing the art.
