Jamie Lee Curtis received the first Oscar of his long career for his role as a tax inspector in ‘Everything at once everywhere’, where he shared a category with Stephanie Hsu in an edition in which Michelle Yeoh won the award for best actress . Curtis says it is for her “surreal” be among the 65 women nominated by the Academy this year and it feels “proud”but he also reflected on the scarcity of women at awards ceremonies and the long road ahead.

The actress is more than aware that things aren’t as easy as they seem when you snag the gold award. “Obviously I would like to see many more women nominated so that there is gender equality in all areas, in all branches”he continued. “I think we’re getting there, but we’re not there yet [a ese punto] absolutely”.
One of the options that have been contemplated and implemented in some award galas is to eliminate the genre from the categories, which would allow artists of any genre to be eligible for the award for best performer. “How do you include all people when there are binary options?”the actress is planned. “It’s a very difficult thing. As a mother of a trans daughter, I completely understand”. However, she is also aware that non-gender categories could further hinder visibility and representation. “I’m concerned that it will reduce opportunities for more women, which I’ve also worked hard to promote. So it’s a tough question, but I think the most important thing is inclusion and [que haya] more women”says Curtis, who concludes: “Basically multiple whores all at once, anytime, anywhere.”

Women at the 2023 Oscars
If you add up all the names in the common list of Oscars 2023 nominations (including multiple nominations with the same name), the problem becomes clear: about 180 are male names, against just 65 female names. That’s probably one of the reasons why only Sarah Polley made her way into the prestigious Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay categories, winning the latter. Polley is no exception, or rather, together with her there are a handful of women who are exceptions in a gala mostly governed by male awards.
Excluding the categories that specify the genre (best actress and best supporting actress), 6 women have won the statuette, and four of them share a nomination (no less meritorious for this). We have the aforementioned screenwriter, Ruth Carter for Best Costume Design in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’, a Judy Chin and Anne Marie Bradley along with Adrien Morot for Best Makeup in “The Whale”, e Kartiki Gonsalves and Guneet Monga for the short documentary “The Elephant Whisperers”. Out of nineteen genderless categories, women were awarded in four: Screenplay, Makeup, Costumes, Documentary Short. So, in fact, there is still a lot to do.
