All that glitters is not gold and not all successes are enjoyed in the same way. Danny Wilde of The Rembrandt, the band that plays ‘I’ll Be There For You’, one of the best-known songs in television history; he gave an interview to The Guardian newspaper in the UK in which he revealed that ‘Friends’ fame it caused such a crisis in the group that it forced them apart for years.
It was 1994 and the Rembrandts were then an alternative rock duo. The “Friends” production company asked them to record a 43-second version of the song for the show’s pilot at the same time as R.E.M.’s “Shiny Happy People” after they declined an offer to sing the song. At first the band’s name didn’t even appear in the credits at the request of the same, because it was a very modern band and they didn’t want anyone to know “that had been sold”.

Luckily things didn’t last forever and in 2002 they reunited again to release the album ‘Lost Together’ and in 2019 they released ‘Via Satellite’. Though they’ve repudiated the song for years, now The Rembrandt has no problem playing “I’ll Be There For You” again at special “Friends” events or wherever asked: “If people are willing to pay you to do something you’re proud of, why not?”, muses Wilde. The song was number 1 for eight weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay and thanks to it (and ‘Just the Way It Is, Baby) Rolling Stone magazine placed the group at number 20 on their list of best songs in 2022. two-hit wonder of every time.
