Amazon Studios and MGM boss Jennifer Salke and citadel Star Priyanka Chopra Jonas took part in one of the few entertainment business discussions this year at SXSW on Friday. They interviewed each other on a variety of topics, including equal pay for leading actresses and launching a tentpole series for a global audience.
Spy series Citadel, The first two episodes, produced by AGBO’s Russo Brothers, will be available on Prime on April 28. (See a new track released today below.)
Although Chopra Jonas was not shy about asking Salke how algorithms play a role in programming decisions, a notable insight came when the Indian actress revealed that she is paid the same as her male lead Richard Madden (without naming him ).
“I have been in the entertainment industry for 22 years. I have done more than 70 feature films and two TV shows,” said Chopra Jonas. “When I did it citadelI was on the same salary as my male actor for the first time in 22 years.”
Chopra Jonas asked Salke if all this happened because a female manager was running the studio.
“I had no doubt that it was completely right,” Salke replied. The two became friends soon after Salke took over the top production job at Amazon Studios.
Regarding the arrival of the wage parity decision, Salke said: “I see this change and find it inspiring. … It takes a woman in the room to make room, to step back, to pause for a moment … Let’s take a closer look.”
Such decisions “have to be intentional and automatic,” said Salke, who wants to make room for more female content creators to give the service their voice.
At the beginning of the session, Chopra asked Jonas Salke about the streamer’s development process. Is it the algorithms that dictate the green light?
“There is no magical algorithm that tells us whether we should do something,” Salke replied. “It’s an art; it comes down to creative persuasion. We try to bring the content to life.” In the case of Citadel, it was the belief that the intellectual property would work outside of India and the US
Salke spoke of “being born into this industry with a lot of confidence” about how she handles her gut when it comes to starting series. She shared a story about former Fox CEO Peter Chernin’s advice: “If you give everyone stomachaches and it works, great. If not, we’ll help you with the next one.”
Salke said, “When I got to Amazon, the scale was exponentially monstrous compared to what I was doing.”
When to start citadelSalke watched local language series resonate far beyond their home countries around the world.
Referring to Netflix’s hit Korean series, Salke said, “If you watch Squid Game They had a tiger on their tail. You have to be prepared for it, because it is available in the respective national languages.”
In citadelMadden stars as Mason Kane, alongside Chopra Jonas as Nadia Sinh, Stanley Tucci as Bernard Orlick, and Lesley Manville as Dahlia Archer. In the series, the global spy agency Citadel has fallen and its agents’ memories have been erased. Now the powerful syndicate Manticore is rising in the void. Can the Citadel agents remember their past and muster the strength to fight back?
