New Zealand’s landscapes have been the setting for great movies for decades, from ‘Avatar: The Water Sense’ to ‘Lord of the Rings’ adaptations, even though the loyalty of JRR Tolkien’s saga to the ocean country is over. At the end of its first season, the filming of the prequel ‘Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ was moved to the UK and, for its second season, it has a new focus: Spain.

Middle-earth will be located Teide National Park, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, according to the Diario de Avisos, a Canary Islands newspaper. This would bring great benefits, given that the series has a titanic budget which has postulated it as the most expensive series in history.

Amazon Studios hasn’t decided what scenery the natural park, which is the largest and oldest of the parks in the Canary Islands, will entail, though we can assume that the volcano that gives it its name is one of its great interests. Not surprisingly, Teide is the third largest volcano in the world, as well as the highest peak in both Spain and the Atlantic Ocean.

A worthy competition

In 2012, digital illustrator Roger Kupelian, who worked on all three Peter Jackson films, anticipated that the Canary Islands could be an ideal setting like New Zealand to orchestrate epic stories. “Just as the ‘Lord of the Rings’ project was released on an island, New Zealand, works like this can also be done in the Canary Islands”the artist said according to La provincia, a newspaper from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
