Review: KIRBY’S RETURN TO DREAM LAND DELUXE is an incredibly fun game

In late February, Nintendo released Kirby’s Return to Dreamland Deluxe. This is a remaster of the exciting Wii title with everyone’s favorite pink puff for Nintendo Switch. It features a story mode, mini-games, and even a new epilogue. Nintendo was kind enough to provide me with a copy of the game for this review, but the thoughts below are my own. You can also download a free demo from Nintendo eShop and try it out before committing.

Badass Kirby is back for a platforming adventure for 1 to 4 players on Planet Popstar. He helps Magolor rebuild his ship with new Mecha and Sand Copy abilities!

Float and fight together with friends on the same system where you control Kirby. Each other player can control a different Kirby or one of Kirby’s iconic friends such as King Dedede, Meta Knight and Bandana Waddle Dee.

This game is awesome. I have to admit that I’ve never played the original Wii version, but that’s why ports/remasters can be good in the gaming world. Now, anyone with a Switch can also enjoy a great side-scrolling platforming adventure. Just like probably everyone else Kirby game, it is very fun to play and quite relaxing. Kirby the titles are not known for being very challenging and the fact that you can make the game very easy by letting Magalor save you from falling and doubling your health can make it a walk in the park. That’s not a bad thing though. This is useful and sometimes even necessary when younger children are playing alone or even co-operating with you.

That’s right, the game allows up to four players to adventure together. Player one will take on the role of Kirby and the other three can also be Kirby (but of different colors) or some of Kirby’s allies: King Dedede, Meta Knight and Bandana Waddle Dee. This is always a plus in my opinion. I love playing with others, especially on the same sofa.

The main story is fun and becomes challenging as you progress. It also reinforces my hatred of water levels. They are always the most annoying to me. As you play, you’ll collect some gears to help fix Malgor’s ship and unlock some areas. There are solo challenges where you have to get the best scores in a level with a specific power, there are rooms where you can access specific powers, and there are rooms with subgames.

There are 10 subgames that you can play with your friends in Merry Magoland. If you just want to have some fun or even spice things up a bit more competitively, these subgames are great to play. They are very short and create a small moment of fun during a small party.

In my day I used to play Kirby’s Return to Dreamland Deluxe, there is only one complaint that I have found. As I mentioned, you unlock subgames in Malgor’s ship with some of the gears you collect. However, these are already unlocked in Merry Magoland from the start. Thankfully, you don’t spend gear to unlock games on the ship, but it feels very redundant. I wish this had been reworked a bit to unlock something else instead of subgames.

Kirby’s Return to Dreamland Deluxe it’s a fun game to play. It’s easy enough but offers hours of fun with a main story that up to four people can play and mini-games perfect for small parties. The game looks great, plays great, and runs well on the old Nintendo Switch. I love using the Mecha ability myself, but let me know your favorite power in the comments below.
