The trio sat down with ComicBook and said the film isn’t exactly a reboot or sequel, but more of a “requel.” have elaborated:
“That’s a great question. I don’t think we know enough about the movie yet to be able to say anything, but yeah, the idea is ‘requel’ to try. So, you know, we’re going to try and borrow what we love from it and find a new way to put the package together.”
When asked who is more daunting to follow, Wes Craven or John Carpenter, the duo laughed. “We are greedy for punishment. I don’t know what we are doing.”
In the story of the original film, a great war between the United States and the Soviet Union is coming to an end and the entire island of Manhattan has been turned into a giant maximum security prison. When Air Force One is hijacked and crashes on the island, the President (Donald Pleasence) is taken hostage by a group of inmates. Plissken snake (Kurt Russell), a former Special Forces soldier turned criminal, is recruited to retrieve the president in exchange for his own freedom.
