A series adaptation of DC Comics’ Dead boy detective has been in the works at HBO Max for nearly a year. But there was a big change as the project has now been moved to Netflix because the project didn’t fit what James Gunn and Peter Safran were planning for DC Studios.
THR reports, “Producers Warner Bros. Television bought the drama after sources say the series didn’t fit into the new chapter of content DC executives James Gunn and Peter Safran are building for the comic book powerhouse. That plan includes five interconnected shows that will live alongside Peacemaker on HBO Max. The fact that HBO Max wouldn’t be able to market the show until 2024 also contributed to the show’s transition between platforms, with executives at the streamer having blessed the producers to take the show elsewhere.
The supernatural series “follows a pair of ghostly detectives as they investigate homicides related to the supernatural.” The story will explore “loss, grief and death through the lens of Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland, two dead British teenagers, and their very much alive friend, Crystal Palace. So, it’s a lot like a vintage crime series, only darker and on acid. It is explained that Charles and Edwin “decided not to enter the afterlife to stay on earth and investigate crimes involving the supernatural.”
The series is the protagonist George Rexstrew AND Jayden Revri as Dead Boy Detectives Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland, and Cassius Nelson (Last night in Soho) as the Crystal Palace. Other cast members include Briana Cuoco (The flight attendant) as Jenny the Butcher, Ruth Connell (Supernatural) as the Night Nurse, Yuyu Kitamura (The Expats) as Niko,Jenn Lyons (Claws) as Esther, e Luke Gage as the Cat King, described as “a charming trickster and traveling feline spirit, who takes a keen interest in Edwin.”
The series pilot was written by Steve Yockey and is also an executive producer and co-showrunner along with Beth Schwartz. Jeremy Carver also executive producer along with Greg Berlanti, Sarah SchechterAND Leigh London Redman by Berlanti Productions. Lee Toland Krieger directed and executive produced the pilot.
