It was recently announced that New Line Cinema and Warner Bros Pictures have partnered with Embracer Group AB’s Middle-Earth Enterprises to develop a series of new Lord of the Rings movie.

It was explained by GuinchardCEO of Embracer Group’s Freemode operating group that “the incomparable world of JRRTolkien returns to the big screen in new and exciting ways. We understand how much these works are appreciated, and by working together with our partners at New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures, we intend to honor the past, look to the future and adhere to the highest level of quality and production values.
The big question is… will he be the director Peter Jackson be involved in any way? Well, he and his writing partners, Fran Walsch AND Philippa Boyens, recently shared a statement saying, “Warner Brothers and Embracer have kept us in the loop every step of the way. We look forward to speaking with them further to hear their vision for the franchise moving forward.”
It would be very cool if Jackson and his creative team ended up getting involved in the future of these films. But this is one of those “wait and see” scenarios. They could very well be involved! But, if they don’t like the direction the studio wants to take, they could easily not be involved. As of right now, they haven’t said yes, but they haven’t said no, either.
I had a gut reaction to this news when I first saw it and initially thought they were going to reboot the original trilogy, but that doesn’t look like that’s going to happen and it looks like they’re going to expand out into the world.
